How to Cut and Clasp Jade Bracelets

Typically, jade bracelets come cut as a solid bangle or as a flexible bracelet with several sections of jade held by metal end caps and joints between pieces. With your bracelet, adding the spacer is a good idea but you will have to have two spacers, not one.

Since the solid jade is not flexible, the bracelet will need to be cut on opposite sides so each half may be connected with a spacer. You will need to find someone with a fine blade diamond saw to cut the jade. These saws are motorized using a 6″ or so circular blade of thin design. Steel tools simply will not do the job. You want a fine and neat cut so the ends are parallel and match nicely.

If a jeweler cannot do this, most will not have fine diamond rock saws, one suggestion is to contact a local rock and gem shop. The rock and gem shops cater to folks who like to do their own stone polishing and a diamond saw is one of the basic tools of the hobby. Ask the rock shop if they can recommend someone has a “thin kef” rock saw. People who do faceted stones or cut opal are most likely to have the diamond saw with a fine (thin) blade and may cut the bracelet for you. The rock shop may also offer this service for a minimal fee.

Spacers will take the form of “end caps” or shallow cups into which the jade is cemented. The spacers could be made with two opposing caps (shallow tubes) for joining the jade ends, with one spacer on each side of the bracelet. Any competent bench jeweler should be able to fabricate the spacer from silver stock or use available silver “findings” to make the caps. Findings is the word used by jewelers to describe the “parts” used in jewelry work, such as ring shanks, stone settings, clasps, catches, etc. Depending on the diameter of the jade, there is the possibility of the jeweler using “bezel cups” to make the spacers.

Bezel cups are stamped cups of silver (or other metal) used to mount stones onto bracelets, rings and other jewelry. Purchased, the bezel cups should work and will cost a fraction of the price if hand fabricated from silver sheet stock. Some silver design should be between each cap to allow the angle of the caps to match the angle of the jade ends for a clean look and secure fit. The use of a single section of silver tube for each spacer is possible but that depends on the angle of the jade at the cut ends and availability of silver tube of large enough diameter.

Yes, the job is certainly possible and not very difficult to do. The problem is getting the bracelet sawn in-two cleanly. After that, having the spacers made should not be a daunting task at all.

If you wanted, the spacers could be made one with a clasp and the other with a hinge, providing a bangle which opens and closes to be placed on the arm.

Joining the jade to the spacer cups (or tubes) will be cement designed for such work. I suggest fine quality epoxy cement which cures to a water clear color. One such cement is Hughes 330, designed for joining gemstone material and metals. Other epoxy cements will work just so long as the cement is applied with care with little excess to show at the caps.

Hip Hop Culture and the Rise of Bling

Hip Hop culture has added a variety of terms, fashion trends, music styles and even personalities to the culture at large. Nothing has captured public interest more than “Bling.” The late 1990’s first saw “Bing” come into the general vocabulary. Bling, originally used in several different rap songs of the time, was coined to describe elaborate jewelry and personal accessories that show that the wearer has taste, talent, and lots of cash.

Hip Hop culture has had a tremendous impact on fashion in general, well beyond the world of Hip Hop. Much of what is “cool” today originally derived from the world of Hip Hop. Jewelry has been particularly impacted by Hip Hop.

Bling is now more commonly used to refer specifically to flashy types of jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, watches, body jewelry, rings and grillz (braces and caps for the teeth). Of course it can also include other accessories such as cell phones or even jeweled glasses or purses. Bling is commonly associated with diamonds and other precious gems, and precious metal such as gold and platinum. This term has become so universally accepted it was actually added to Webster’s Dictionary in 2002.

Hip Hop has made ornate jewelry as prevalent for men as for women. The popularity of Hip Hop culture and bling has drawn a lot more attention to larger pieces of jewelry that are selected to become the center of focus, not to just add to the overall outfit. Hip Hop artists can be seen on music videos sporting huge link chains in gold and platinum with large diamond and gem-encrusted pendants. The designs are specifically designed for men, with heavier weight and larger scale.

Bling is big, bling is flashy, and bling is meant to impress. It is meant to symbolize success. The use of various symbols including dollar signs, ornate crosses and other religious symbols, gambling symbols, and even different breeds of dogs and animals are all popular within the Hip Hop jewelry world.

Bracelets and necklaces tend to be very large link or dog collar-type chains, however solid bracelets are also very popular for both men and women. Rings tend to be chunky, wide, and feature multiple small diamond chips or several larger diamonds, either real diamonds or cubic zirconia, depending on your budget, in elaborate patterns and designs. There is a general sense of more is better with regards to wearing Bling. Rarely will you find any piece being worn alone. More typically, pieces are worn in multiples.

Jewelry designers outside the Hip Hop world have integrated the concepts of large, heavy, and flashy elements into their own jewelry lines. Over the last ten years jewelry styles have definitely been impacted by the Bling style, becoming larger, bulkier, and more ornate. You can now find Bling-style jewelry everywhere from fine jewelry designers to department stores. Available Bling jewelry ranges from the high-end, in gold and platinum with genuine gem,s to the more affordable, in sterling silver with simulated gems. Today, everyone can sport a little Bling.

How To Read Jewelry Marks

The number markings on precious gold jewelry are a bit of confusion to lots of people. We are generally used to seeing a karat or silver mark like this: 10K, 14K, 18K, Sterling, etc. The numbers mean the same thing.

For 14k the number is technically 583 but most manufacturers adopted the European way and make 14k gold a tiny bit over 14k, so the mark is 585 in most 14k jewelry. 18K is marked 750. If the mark is valid and there is a makers mark also in the jewelry, the number means these items are 18k gold.

Here is where the numbers come from. Pure gold is called 24 karat. For 18k gold, there are 18 parts of pure gold mixed with other metals to make the metal suitable for use in jewelry. 24k is too soft alone to stand up or to hold stones well. 18 parts pure gold divided by 24, or 18/24 equals 750. That is where the number comes from. The jewelry is 75% pure gold, 750 parts gold with 250 parts other metals out of “1000” parts. It is easier to think of it as a percent which is pure gold in the recipe.

Sterling silver is marked 925. Sterling is 92.5% pure silver and the rest is other metal, generally copper.

What does it mean if the ring marked 14K PR? The 14K simply means it is 14K (Karat) gold and because of the K means it would have been made in either South East Asia or The United States. The PR marks are just the Maker or Store ID or even a design mark, and have no relevance to the Value.

The basic decimal formula to work out the quality of gold content is quite simple, as they are all measured in ‘Parts per Thousand.’ This means that 9ct gold is calculated like this: 9 (for 9ct) is divided by pure gold (24) and then multiplied by 1000 (for pure gold as a decimal). ie: 9/24*1000=375 That 375 is the decimal quality for 9ct gold and is sometimes shown with a decimal point in front – .375

The old Victorian standard of 15ct gold is calculated the same way – 15/24*1000 = 625 (Not quite the numbers you have on your jewelry. Dental gold is 16ct or 666 recurring. But you can also reverse this formula by starting with the decimal and working back. ie: 375/1000*24 = 9

In your case we can use 698/1000*24 = almost 17ct

I have a platinum engagement ring and found a wedding ring that I really like but the band is made of palladium. Is it safe to wear these two metals together without one damaging the other?

It will wear the softer metal OVER TIME but that could take many years. My Grandmothers wedding ring eventually wore away the band of her engagement ring but it took over 20 years to do.

Platinum and Palladium and quite good together but I would take the advice of your local friendly jeweler and have them check both rings. Sometimes the Platinum may be a lower grade in order to make it harder – so have that checked.

The History of Elastic and Its Use in Clothing

Elastic is a small narrow loop of rubber or similar material used for tightening, gripping, and holding of things with ease purposes. It has the quality of being stretched and then returning back to its original shape. Elastic has different names like rubber bands, gum bands, binder, and lacquer band.

The history of elastic has its roots back to thousands of years. The modern elastic band goes back to the mid 19th century. From the very beginning, man knew there were certain objects that would spring back to their original shape when the pressure applied on them was removed.

At first, this thing annoyed man but with the invention of fire and creating the wheel, man also thought of using elastics in his life. This property of elasticity was commonly showed by the animal parts, which man ate. Thus, the first elastic strings were born, which were made from animal gut to hold things together. With the passage of time, man realised that these strings of elastic could also be used as weapons. When a bullet was loaded in to these elastic strings, they were thrust through the air at a great velocity. This resulted in the invention of bow and arrow.

Rubber is a very popular elastic material. Many of the products made from rubber are bounced around, stretched, and pounded, and since they are elastic they return to their original shape. Because of this property, people use rubber in a lot many ways. It was named rubber because people found out it could rub the pencil stains. Rubber was used by the Early American Indians before Columbus even set his foot there. They called it Caoutchouc derived from the word cahuhchu meaning weeping wood.

This substance was obtained from the sap of the rubber tree. The original rubber bands in older days were made from the latex sap of rubber trees. However, today rubber bands are made from technology that is more modern and materials. The Mayans also added juice from vines to the rubber sap to create a durable and elastic material to bind things together. This was the first type of the rubber band. Later in 1845 modern rubber band was invented. In 1923, first mass production of rubber bands was started by William Spencer.

Other elastic materials have also several uses. Rubber has various uses in today’s world. Rubber is used for tires, elastic bands and other bouncy and stretchable objects. Elastic materials are also used in sports. Insulated, elastic balls are essential to many sports as non-elastic balls would deform when used. Basketballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls have to be elastic to allow them to their normal shape.

Elastic is used in clothing as well mostly for fitting purposes. Elastic provides a room for stretch ability and recoverability of clothes. The elastic waistbands are especially very much in use. They help you choose pants, trousers, etc of size smaller than your original waist, thus making you look slimmer. In addition, they can be used for a longer period, since they don’t get wasted if you gain or lose weight. They are adjustable. Elastics are also used for chest fitted gowns or shirts. They also act as an accessory to create various designs on your shirts. The elastic laminated sheet is also used in many articles of clothing. Such articles include shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, socks, athletic wear, swimsuits, shorts, medical and surgical garments et cetera. The stretch ability and recoverability in these clothes because of elastic sheet helps movements easy and make clothes more durable since they don’t get torn or ruptured.

Guess Bags – The History Of

Guess (the designer brand) is a us premium designer label that creates a collection of different of fashion clothing and fashion accessories including Guess designer handbags.

This company was started in America in the early 1980’s and was created by a group of brothers who were raised in the city of Marseille in the south of France.

The Marciano siblings always had a fascination with the way of life on America’s West Coast and moved to California in the late 1970’s. Showing both their admiration of classic American fashion with a European eye the Marciano sibliings very soon recognised a niche in the American fashion world.

Towards the end of the 1970’s, denim was perceived to be old fashioned and far removed from it’s level of popularity of the 50’s and 60’s. The Marciano family had designed a new type of jeans labeled as the “Marilyn” jeans. This 3 zip design was not appreciated by the fashion press or retail boutiques and it was only after a lot of negotiations were the Marciano siblings able to secure a sample order with the Bloomingdales store. Even then the buyers at Bloomingdales agreed only to buy two dozen pairs of jeans and this was more of a favour than a financial strategy. Shortly after displaying the jeans for sale Bloomingdales had completely sold out and a completely new fashion brand was born in the eyes of the world.

Over time the business have incorporated even more accessories to the Guess clothing brand and Guess bags are now one of the many fashion accessories this company now creates.Proving to be particularly successful these purses and handbags add a real look of sassy style to any women’s wardrobe.

In recent years the company has changed into producing accessories for the home such as bed linen, scents and wrist watches and the firm seems to be continuing to go from strength to strength.

Can You Wear Gold and Silver Accessories Together?

Accessories can either make or break an outfit, but with the right piece you’re sure to complete a stunning wardrobe.

Fashion mishaps often happen with either the wrong choice of style, wrong color combination, mismatched wardrobe, and mismatched accessories.

The common (and old) rule for accessories or jewelry is to never wear gold and silver jewelry together. But with the trend nowadays, a lot of women are seen wearing gold with silver bangles. Let’s admit it, it does look nice. So, what is the rule now? Should silver and gold go together or not?

Nowadays, with women’s accessories, it’s safe to just forget all about it – forget about the so-called rule on mixing accessories. Besides, the trend these days are all about mixing and matching! With all the fashionable jewelry and accessories out there, it would really be a shame to wear them only with some pieces. These days, women need not be afraid to layer silver and gold – be it with bangles, necklaces or other pieces of jewelry.

While breaking some old fashion rules is now accepted, let’s face it, there are still some people who have a preference for one type of jewelry over the other. For instance, some women feel that gold doesn’t look good on their pale skin, thus, so they only wear silver or white gold jewelry.

Again, it’s perfectly alright to mix silver with gold. For one, many top jewelry designers and jewelry manufacturers use gold and silver (or white gold) on the same jewelry piece. There is no reason why women cannot wear gold and silver jewelry at the same time.

But to some women who want to break the old don’t-mix-silver-with-gold rule but want to play it safe, they can always mix silver with white gold. Such a combination never clashes and looks elegant at the same time.

While women are a combination of adventurous and reserved personalities when it comes to trying new trends in fashion, men are a bit more on the conservative type – simply because their accessories are pretty basic – watch, ring, and cufflinks.

Imagine seeing a man in a suit also wearing a gold watch with a silver ring. It may not look obvious from afar, but once he gets upclose you would see the difference.

Gold is actually one of the basic and safest color for an accessory to choose for a man’s attire. The only rule though in wearing men’s gold accessories is that it should match well with other ones you’re wearing For example, if a man chooses to wear gold cufflinks, he has to make sure that they match with the color of his belt buckle, and other pieces of jewelry he’s wearing, like a gold-tone wristwatch, bracelet, or ring. On the other hand, if he’s wearing silver cufflinks, all other accessories should be silver-toned as well.

Online Music Shops

There are so many online music sites on the Internet that promise you unlimited downloads of music. While some of them may be genuine sites, a large number of them are fraud. Their sole purpose seems to get sensitive information about you. Most of these sites will ask you to register with them. They will prompt you to distribute them your credit card number, mobile phone number, email ID, street address, and monthly income. This information may some day be used by them to your disadvantage.

Peer-to-peer websites promise you unlimited online music downloads. Such sites are known to infect your computer with viruses and malware when you download online music from them. The malware will disable valuable resources of your computer. You may need to install a malware removing software to get rid of it. These sites are usually full of aggressive flashing ads and irritating pop-ups. It becomes very difficult to navigate the site and find what you want.

Some of these sites may even trick you into paying for the software that you will need to download online music. The same software could have been available free of cost on other sites. Look for the price of subscription and check if there are any hidden charges for burning a CD. Some Websites may disappear overnight after collecting money from you for membership. To avoid this situation, read the terms and conditions of the site and check if the site is legally authorized to give you free online music CD downloads. The last thing you would want is to become a law offender.

It also makes sense to check the site's reputation. Find how long they have been into the business and read clients' feedbacks & reviews. If you do not have enough time for research, try this quick check for a possible scam. Navigate your mouse over the major links on the site like "Download Now" or "Online Music CD Download." If you see the same URL that your homepage has, better go to some other site.

The online music CDs industry is exposed to various unethical practices and tricks. But it does not mean that you can not enjoy your favorite latest music. If you take few simple steps to secure yourself, you can certainly enjoy your favorite and latest music.

The 7 Biggest Mistakes Most New Daycare Owners Make – And How to Avoid Them!

What does it take to be successful in child care?

Obviously, you should have a deep & passionate desire to take care of children, a huge amount of patience, and the ability to juggle several tasks at once (such as warming a bottle while helping toddlers with an art project).

It also helps if you have a separate space in your home, such as a finished basement, where you can run your child care business.

But as if that isn’t enough, there are many things that a successful home daycare owner needs to be good at besides caring for children. Honestly, it can be quite daunting.

Things like getting paid on time from parents, writing solid policies & contracts, marketing your business to new potential clients, obtaining the right insurance policy, understanding record-keeping and how it affects your taxes, and overall, just getting started in a manner that will optimize success.

To help you get started more successfully, here are seven of the biggest, costliest mistakes women make when starting their own home-based child care business, and how to avoid them.

BIG MISTAKE #1: Not doing the proper research on the child care market in your town or city.

This is a crucial step that many new child care business owners miss, usually because they’re not sure how to go about it. Or they may think that it’s not really necessary to do the research, because they don’t understand how it could impact them.

After all, it’s just a small home-based business, right? Why do you need to do all that extra work up-front?

The goal here is not to spend weeks or months completing some huge market research project that you’re not ever going to use.

I’m talking about spending a few hours over the next few days, calling around (or maybe visiting some other child care businesses) and asking key questions.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about. My neighbor Mary, who runs a child care business in her home, discovered a couple things about our local market that helped her create a more profitable business. The first thing was, our town has ½-day Kindergarten, not full-day. By talking to other Moms in our town, Mary found there was a need in our town for “before-and-after care”, that is someone who could watch Kindergarteners & older kids before and after school. She structured her daycare to fill this need. All she had to do was make sure the buses were able to pick up & drop off these kids at her home, and she was able to start taking kids.

So what you want to uncover, when you do your upfront research, is a “pocket of unfulfilled need” in terms of child care. You don’t need it to be a huge pocket, but something unique about your business that will bring you customers who have that need.

Other examples of this are:

– offering second or third shift care if you have large companies in your town who employ people on evening or overnight shifts

– offering bilingual care or special languages, such as sign language for babies

– offering special meals (such as organic or vegetarian) if you live in a town where that would be considered desirable (like Boulder, Colorado or a similar college town)

Again, you are asking key questions and trying to uncover an unfulfilled need in your town or city. You can begin by calling your local Child Care Resource & Referral Agency (CCR&R), your local elementary schools, talking to neighbors and friends, and visiting other child care businesses in your town. You can even call other home child care businesses and talk to these women about what they are seeing in the market. Usually, women in child care help each other out by forming friendships and partnerships, so don’t be intimidated.

By taking the time to do the research, you will gain a huge advantage by understanding your market and how you can be successful within that market.

BIG MISTAKE #2: Not getting the right liability protection for you and your business.

If you want to be able to sleep easy at night and not worry about getting sued, you’ll need to be properly covered. You need the real scoop on what type of insurance to buy, and how much it should cost, so you don’t overpay.

Many new child care business owners make the mistake of thinking that their homeowner’s policy is enough to cover them if there’s a problem. But the truth is, that policy usually doesn’t provide enough protection, nor the right kind of protection you need for special situations that a daycare owner can face.

An example of this situation would be if your house had a power outage, and you had to close …

Scorpion Jewelry

There’s something on your neck!

What will they think of next? When the hip-hip movement began, and teens started wearing car hood ornaments around their neck, you probably thought that was strange. Well, that’s nothing compared to the latest fashion in teen jewelry. You know those poisonous bugs with the pointy serpents tail you see on television (or in real life if you live in one of those dry desert climates)? Or you may recognize them as a popular zodiac sign. Yes, Scorpions! The latest fashion in jewelry is to where these acrylic encased real bugs as jewelry.

Now, what happened to good old fashion jewelry? You know, back in the days where young girls wore crosses and hearts, and the boys a gold chain? That was before teens would seek out their own “identity” by tattooing barbed wire around their arms and Chinese letters across their lower back. Or, piercing any parts of their bodies, they can fit a piece of metal into.

Well scorpions are now the “new thing”. Originally worn by young boys, and probably purchased as a souvenir at the local science center, scorpion jewelry is now a main stream jewelry fashion worn by both men and woman. Sold at retails up to thirty dollars, these once feared exoskeleton members of the insect family are not shown off in a assorted color acrylic pendants, and incorporated into a slew of stylish bracelets, necklaces and anklets. So, the next time you look over and notice a scorpion on a strangers ankle, don’t scream. Take a closer look and you may notice it only to be a piece of new scorpion jewelry.

Who really knows how long this latest fashion will remain? Will it be a fad or will this be a fashion such as wearing shark teeth, that stands the test of time? You’d have to admit, wearing a piece of deadly scorpion jewelry around your neck would symbolize strength, but would you wear one on your upcoming job interview? I wouldn’t risk it in today’s economy.

Fashion Tips and Advice – How to Pick Clothes That Flatter Your Particular Body Type

One of the most common mistakes women make when shopping is not purchasing clothes that flatter their particular body shapes. There are four basic female body shapes:

1) Pear shape – upper body is noticeably thinner than lower body. Weight gain tend to accumulate around hips and thighs.
2) Hourglass shape – very curvy body with clearly defined waist.
3) Apple shape – upper body is noticeably larger than lower body. Weight gain tend to accumulate around the waistline.
4) Rectangle shape – figure appears "straight up and down", and curves are not very well-defined.

Pear shaped figures are flattered by clothes that enhance and draw attention to the upper body while emphasizing the waist. Wrap shirts and off-the-shoulder or V-neck tops are very flattering. Jackets with nipped-in waists and pockets and enhancements around the bust work well with this figure. Pants or jeans should be cut to where they fall straight down from the widest part of your hip with a mid-rise waist. Boot cut and slightly flared pants are ideal, but stay away from tapered legs.

Hourglass shapes are flattered by clothes that are proportional on both the top and the bottom, and attention should be drawn to the waist. Wrap tops and shirts that are gathered around the waist look great on this body type, but stay away from boxy styles. Pants and jeans that fall away from the widest part of your hip look best. Fitted, straight, or flared jeans work well as long as the flare does not exceed the width of your hips.

Apple shaped figures are flatted by light, layered fabrics. Proper layering around the midsection can make you look shapely versa thick. Monochromatic themes work best on this body type, as wearing the same colors on the top and bottom will create clean, straight lines. Tops and shirts should never be tight or clingy, and should always be long enough to at least hit the hip area. V-necks and wrap tops are very flattering, while chunky styles and long, thick jackets should be avoided. Bootcut jeans and pants that fall below the ankle are a great choice. A little stretch in the jeans goes a long way to pull in the midsection and emphasize the right curves.

Rectangle, or "straight shaped" figures are flattered by more form-fitting clothes with mixed and matched tops and bottoms to create the image of curves. Wide belts are recommended around the waistline. Tops and jackets with nipped and flounced waists are ideal, and the bottoms should not extend beyond the hipbones. Off the shoulder, wide necked, or V-necked tops are very flattering. Pants or slacks with wide waist bands and full or flared legs that fit low on the hips are ideal.

Remember, all body shapes are beautiful, and there is no "ideal shape". Relax and have a blast while shopping for funky, fun clothes, and enhance the beauty that Mother Nature provided!

The Goodness of Polarized Fishing Sunglasses

The one thing that we all can be sure of with summer approaching is the attraction of summer sports, fishing being on the top list (if you’re reading this and there’s snow outside, summer’s still coming!). There is hardly anyone of us who would refuse to go for a fishing trip. A few of us might fancy going out on a boat ride and do fishing at the same time. Whatever the choice maybe for a chilled out summer sport experience you just can’t do without a good pair of polarized fishing sunglasses. I know this for a fact that normal sunglasses won’t do us any good while we indulge ourselves in these activities. Polarized sunglasses are meant for water sports. By the time you are done reading this small article you will realize why these glasses are so essential plus how you can go about buying a pair for yourself. Even if you do have one, it does not hurt to try out the latest ones with anti-reflective or mirror coatings as well.

The best thing about polarized fishing sunglasses is this that they reduce glare making them quite useful for fishing. Everything appears transparent, whether you are fishing in a lake, river or deep ocean. The polarized sunglasses makes you see everything crystal clear through the water. Whatever activity you do with the polarized glasses on you will be focused since your vision will be very clear. There is generally no point in fishing wearing the plain tinted sunglasses as your vision may be very poor with them on. This will only lead to loss of interest in your fishing as well.

I am not saying that these sunglasses are meant for everything, polarized fishing sunglasses are a definite must have if you have plans for a fishing trip with family and friends.

Finding one for yourself

Polarized fishing sunglasses can be easily available at local retail stores, malls and online too. The prices could also vary and you can set a budget for your pair of polarized fishing sunglasses. Don’t worry about what you pay as long as you know that they are genuine polarized sunglasses. You don’t have to go for the most expensive ones either; you will be able to get one within your budget after all we all have different preferences and budgets.

With polarized sunglasses at hand there is hardly any doubt that you summer activities will be full of fun. By browsing online you will be more familiar about the choices that you have and accordingly make your selection.

Here are a few brands that make polarized sunglasses: Maui Jim, Costa Del Mar, Ray Ban, Bolle, and Oakley. Look for hydrophobic coatings and anti-reflective coatings to make the lenses easier to clean and reduce back-side light scatter. One way to determine if your current lenses are polarized is to look at your cell phone screen while turning it. If the screen darkens as you turn then your lenses are polarized. There are also fitovers which are sunglasses that fit over your regular clear glasses.

Be sure to protect your eyes and give yourself the best vision possible.

Tips to Keep Your Baby Safe in Summer

Yes, summer does that to your baby – transform him / her from a little bundle of joy to an irritable and shrieking tiny-horror troubled by dehydration, rashes, sunburns and itches all over. It leaves you wondering how you can make the first summers of the baby's life cool and fun. Here is how:

Keep your baby out of harsh sunlight

Summer is no reason to keep your baby locked up at home; every baby needs its share of fresh air and sunlight. However, a baby's soft sensitive skin is particularly vulnerable to lasting sun damage. So make it a rule to stay indoors between 10 am and 5 pm when the heat is unbearable. Instead, go for a stroll in the relatively cool early morning or evening. While outside, remain in the shade as much as possible and avoid too much direct sunlight.

Proper clothing keeps the baby cool

Synthetic fabrics make the baby hot and uncomfortable. Beside, it blocks air passage causing prickly heat or rashes. Cotton clothes are the ideal choice as they keep the body cool and allow air to flow freely. The baby's head and face can be easily protected with a wide-brimmed hat – preferably, one without a restrictive elastic band.

A dollop of sunscreen – is it safe for babies?

Sunscreen in summer is critical because sunburns sustained in the first 15 years of life are responsible for skin cancer later. Although there are no confirmed reports that sunscreen itself is unsafe for babies, you might choose not to apply it on infants less than 6 months old. On older ones, an SPF 50 sunscreen recommended for babies protect skin against UV rays from sun. A generous quantity of this sunscreen should be rubbed into skin 30 minutes prior to stepping out into sunshine; for added defense, dab sunscreen on parts of skin covered by clothing. While driving in a car or even on a cloudy day, let every inch of your baby be sunscreen protected!

Sunglasses make your baby look and feel cool!

Opinion is divided but some suggest that good quality sunglasses can protect babies' eyes from sun. Plastic fancy / toy goggles are damaging to the eyes and do not offer adequate protection. Always, buy good quality sunglasses – whether for your baby or for yourself!

Keep the baby hydrated at all times

A baby's surface area is high compared to body mass, so they get dehydrated quickly. Babies below 6 months of age should be breast-fed whenever they like. Others must be encouraged to take extra drinks of water at regular intervals. If signs of dehydration – no urination for 4 – 6 hrs, crying without tears, sunken eyes etc – are noted, give enough water and apply a wet sponge to the forehead at once, to revive the baby. If symptoms persist rush to a hospital: your baby could be suffering from heat stroke.

Keep your guard up against food poisoning

There is at least one group that loves the heat and humidity of summer – microbes. They flourish in foodstuff causing food borne illnesses. To avoid contamination, wash your hands clean before handling food; all surfaces coming in contact with food, like dinner service, cutting boards etc should be meticulously clean. While traveling, carry moist towelettes or tissue for cleansing. It is safer to discard food left out of refrigerator for over 1 hr. The water your baby drinks can be as much a source of microbes as the food: see that every drop of water ingested is safe.

A pristine baby pool delights and cools

Splashing in the backyard pool affords the baby instant relief from heat. And for the parents, it is a delightful scene to watch. Make the experience hassle-free by ensuring that water is treated to kill microbes: otherwise, it can lead to pink eye, sore throat, cold etc, or dirrhea, if water is accidently swallowed. From time to time check diapers and in the event of a leakage change the water. Remember not to change diapers by the pool; take the baby to the bathroom instead. In summer steer clear of public swimming pools, spas etc. All this guarantees that your baby is playing in water that is as fresh as it looks.

Drive those insects away

Swarms of insects launch full-fledged attacks, and those nasty red rashes on pudgy hands and feet make us wonder if babies are explicit targets. To shield your baby against bites deploy insect-repellents, preferably with natural ingredients, like oil of lemon, eucalyptus, citronella etc; use a product safe for babies and follow directions. While applying, avoid their hands (obviously enough, they put their hands in their mouths all the time!) And the area around mouth and eyes. Wash off as soon as possible. Apply more to …
