4 Tips To Spotting Fake Ray-Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses

The Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses have been around since the 50’s. To call them popular is an understatement. Flip the pages of an entertainment magazine and chances are there will be at least one photo of a celebrity with a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers on.

But being an iconic eye-wear model which is arguably the best-selling model sun-glass model ever, has one major drawback – the presence of countless fakes.

Fake Wayfarer models are everywhere, on the internet as well as at your friendly neighborhood mall. Fakes are getting harder and harder to detect as many come quite close aesthetically the originals. But using fakes may cause damage to your precious eyes in the long run because fake Wayfarers lack the original’s technology.

Fortunately there are still a few ways in which you can spot a fake.

The Price

This may seem a bit too obvious but you are not going to find a brand new pair of authentic Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses for $30 anywhere. Even the Junior Wayfarer models costs more than that. However, just because a pair of Wayfarers cost more than $100, does not mean it is authentic. It could be just some unscrupulous seller trying to improve his margins by hiking up the price to fool unsuspecting customers.

New Owners

Not many realize this but Bausch & Lomb sold the Ray-Ban brand to Milan based Luxottica in 1999. So models manufactured after that date should have the text “100% UV Protection – Ray-Ban – Sunglasses By Luxottica” printed on the seal on the case. Any model post 1999 that has “Made in USA”, “BL” or “Bausch & Lomb” printed on it is a sure fake.

Some fakes get all the visible prints correct but still have the initials BL etched on the lens. Most probably because they did not want to waste the lenses. Originals will have the initials “RB” etched on the corner of the left lens.

Inconsistent Model Number

Wayfarers come in different models and each model has a model code. For example, RB2140 and RB2132, which represent the original Wayfarer model and the new Wayfarer model respectively. Sometimes, the fake sunglasses do not display the correct model number on the inside of the temples. So be sure to check this out when you buy a pair of Wayfarers.

Logo On The Outside Temple

Fake sunglasses also have the Ray-Ban logo on the outside of the temples just like the originals. But on closer inspection, you will notice that the fakes have the logos glued on while the logo on authentic Wayfarers are actually part of the temple.

Ray Ban – Useful Information About Ray Ban Sunglasses

Perhaps no other brand is as well known as that of Ray Ban sunglasses. For more than 70 years the look of Ray-Bans has dominated the silver screen and pages of fashion magazines. The standard in dark lenses and heavy plastic frames has long been recognized for its "incognito" image.

Was not it Lauren Bacall who first wore them in film? Maybe not but everyone remembers at least one old B & W film star who looked great in the quintessential Ray-Ban. Stars are still seen wearing these major brand name sunglasses anywhere that people pretended to avoid the press. Ray-Bans have been making the scene so long that they are now producing a retro Original Wayfarer style.

Signed and available in several fashion frame colors, genuine Ray-Bans say summertime in a universal language. Pink, tortoise shell, turquoise, two-toned and a whole range of colors there is just something casual yet designer about these shades. The Luxottica Group sells Ray-Ban Sunglasses to discerning fashion aficionados of all ages. Ray-Ban juniors are sold for those just starting to notice fashion.

Most Ray-Bans are sold by model number while others have both a style name and number. These can be found online at auction sites with fairly high price tags. For instance the RB 3267 and RB 3293 aviators run nearly $ 100. The RB2940 Wayfarer is a little more expensive. The best idea is to buy that favorite Ray-Ban style when ever and where ever it can be found at a better price point.

Once the Ray-Bans are admitted at whatever price they should be ruthlessly protected since these have the potential to become collectable one day. Carefully stored vintage Wayfares fetch a handsome price. They no doubt compliment the Hawaiian Shirts with coconut buttons and wooden surf boards. Collectible or investment dressing they are always a favorite possession.

Fortunately there are lots of Ray-Ban styles that are far less expensive. The style and name brand that consumers have loved for generations are available to all budgets. For those who do want to spend more though the Ray-Ban limited edition signed and numbered ultras were injected. Limited edition means that the RB8028K and the RB8029K will be instant collectibles. Investment advisors all agree that buying what you like is the best way to invest. This is great advice to Ray-Ban fans.

Modern apparel may require the latest styles. Ray-Ban sunglasses offer new styles as well as time honored classics. Pastels, lightweight or even clear sunglass frames are available too. No one will inspect the entire Ray-Ban sunglass line without finding something that is flattering. No face is too wide or too narrow. No one is too young or too old. All will find something of interest in the Ray-Ban collection.

There are lots of ways to stretch a budget. The wise consumer is one who can buy something needed then use it for decades and then resale it on the collectors market. No one is wasting money on a proposition like that. Put your vision in the hands of the professionals at Ray-Ban for that endless summer.

Sunglasses Guide For Beginners

Sunglasses are one of the most fashionable accessories known to man. Celebrities have known this for years, its there way of saying, I'm too important and good looking to even make eye contact with the average Joe. However for one of us normal people to pull the sunglasses look without looking like a seventies throw back can be quite difficult.

The original sun glasses were more practical than fashionable, designed to shield ones eyes from direct sunlight. As scientists started to realize the dangers of Ultraviolet radiation, sunglasses became a popular beach accessory. Once the fashion conscious beach crowd started to wear sunglasses regularly, the designer brands got involved. Since the 1950's there has even been pop and rock songs that mention sunglasses.

Its very very easy to look bad in sunglasses, what many people do not realize is the fact that you have to get a pair that matches the shape of your face. Even after all this time, the sunglasses in the Matrix are still cool.

As a general rule of thumb, you are best going for a pair of sun glasses with the opposite shape to your face. For example, if you have a round face, square sun glasses usually work well.

Designer Sunglasses

Designer sunglasses are highly worn after which makes fake ones very common. Buying your glasses from a reputable store is usually a must. However, a pair of fake cheap sunglasses can often be a worthy purchase, as you will not be too upset if you leave them on a beach or in a restaurant. I would be quite upset if i left my Oakley's in a bar.

Three classic designer sun glasses to consider when making your purchase are Oakley, Dior and Chanel. These are great designers that have been creating beautiful eye wear for years.

Oakley sunglasses are efficient in combining beautiful design with high-tech materials such as titanium for frames or plutonite for the lenses. Oakley's are a popular choice in the sports world as there lenses are second to non.

Dior sunglasses are popular among the fashion world and celebs. Weaving a pair of Christian Dior sunglasses will make you feel a part of the high class fashion world and will also get you noticed, depends on the circles you travel in of course.

Chanel sunglasses provide an elegance that makes any woman wearing them feel full of femininity and grace. Like anything Chanel however, expect to pay top prices.

Remember that popular brand sunglasses are usually expensive so you are best shopping around to get the best deal. Bear in mind that if you see a deal that's too good to be true, nine times out of ten it will be. Nobody likes being ripped off so be careful when making your purchase. Avoid like the plague market stalls when your on holiday.

A good pair of sunglasses will last you forever, and will stay in fashion nearly as long, just look at the classes Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

Choosing Sunglasses

Even though summer is almost at an end the need for a pair of quality sunglasses exists through the year. Sunglasses are very important to wear when outdoors because they help protect your eyes from harmful UV Rays the sun is constantly emitting but choosing the right pair of sunglasses can present some head scratching for you. This article will show you how to choose the best possible pair of sunglasses that fits your style and works best with your face type.

One of the first things you will notice when choosing a new pair of sunglasses is the sheer number of brands and models of sunglasses on the market today and weeding through all of them can be quite frustrating. A good way to decide on a particular style of sunglasses is to look through fashion magazines and periodicals, circling the sunglasses that appeal to you. It's also important to realize that not all sunglasses will look good on every single person and this brings us to the next point about choosing the right sunglasses.

Sunglasses can look great on a celebrity but are they really going to look just as good on you? It all depends on your face and in order to look stylish you will need a pair of sunglasses that matches and compliments the natural shape of your face. People with classic oval faces are the lucky ones and can wear pretty much any style of sunglasses, if your face is not oval fret not, there are still plenty of quality stylish sunglasses that will work perfectly for you. People with round, should stay away from round eyewear because they accentuate the roundness of your face. People with long faces should choose larger sunglasses that have more height and those of us with short faces should choose sunglasses with shorter, smaller lenses.

When it comes to choosing stylish sunglasses you do not have to break the bank there are plenty of quality replica sunglasses for sale and cheap sunglasses that work just as well as the expensive designer sunglasses.

Sunglasses of Stars

Whether they are used to escape paparazzi, or just a better match with clothes, or just to block the strong sunlight, sunglasses are unduly accessories the stars must have. In Hollywood, "bigger is better" is still the trend at the moment. Chanel's and Gucci's sunglasses are the most common first – line brands among the stars' sunglasses.

Michelle Trachtenberg likes brown "toad mirror", so does Jessica Alba. Kate Hudson prefers "pilot" sunglasses. Both of these two types of glasses are frequently companied by the stars. The latter kind of sunglasses is suitable for women of "peach heart" type face. When choosing the sunglasses, we must pay attention to their sizes. The best one is just to cover up a part of the brow.

Nicole Richie picks Ray – ban sunglasses. Lyons likes all the black sunglasses, while Victoria Beckham always wears rectangular black sunglasses. Black or all black Ray – Ban sunglasses can truly be the star's level of "men in black" which means cool. However, they are particular about the wearer's face and the best outline is a clear slap face.

Eva Longoria appreciates red – edged and butterfly – shaped sunglasses. Audrina Patridge loves the gradient – colored ones along the butterfly – shaped sunglasses, and so does Jennifer Lopez. Butterfly – shaped sunglasses basically block the brow and they emphasize the parts of the forehead and cheek bones at the same time. If you are confident about the two parts, maybe this kind of sunglasses is a greater choice for you!

What's more, Angelina Julie is accredited to wearing two – tone sunglasses when going out. Although the two – tone sunglasses can make a deep impression on others, it looks too colored in everyday life.

In addition, many stars play retro fashion, wearing a few pairs of round sunglasses which are a bit like Harry Potter's round sunglasses, popular among Sienna Miler, Mary Kate Olson, Lady GaGa.

As early as the New York's fashion week in September 2008, round glasses were on a comprehensive fall. Vera Wang's pair of round glasses is a little exaggerated, playful and lively. Ralph Lauren sees most loyal to the true feature of round glasses.

Aviator Sunglasses – A Fashion Must-Have

Like many people who own them or who want to own them, I feel that aviators are plainly the coolest and sexiest type of sunglasses on the market. The design is simply iconic and they have a certain air of nostalgia about them. How did they get that reputation? Most people, especially youth, do not even realize that they were actually designed to be practical and originally for military use, not so much fashionable. I also doubt that most people realize that it was a very well known brand that invented the original design: Ray-Ban.

It's fascinating how apparel that has origins in military use, makes its way into fashion, from cargo pants to dog tags.

To be fair the aviation industry, more than the military, had a critical role to play in marketing the aviator design by Ray-Ban. Aviator sunglasses have earned their reputation not only through looks alone, but through the glamor, respect and mystique that surround pilots and the aviation industry.

At any given time, a legion of young boys and girls around the world have dreamed of becoming pilots who sport the essential pair of aviator sunglasses. I for one, know that I wanted to be a pilot and it remains a dream of mine to this day.

Furthermore, aviator shades are forever immortalized in great film classics such as the 1986 hit Top Gun, which featured revolutionary mirrored sunglasses that sparked a fashion craze. Almost every single actor in that film wore a pair of aviator shades at one point during the movie. Today, many of the world's largest celebrities sport aviators for almost any occasion. Some of them wear classic styles, but some are downright outrageous, gilded in gold and diamonds.

In the end, the simple aviator design is timeless and will continue to be a fashion icon for years to come. You can be sure that you are not buying into a fad, but into a classic design that will never go out of style.

When you do buy a pair of these sunglasses, you will not want to take them off. Wear them every day, wear them to the club or wear them when you go shopping. Remember that aviator shades do not just cover your eyes … they're a fashion statement as well.

The History of Ray-Ban Sunglasses

The history of Ray-Ban sunglasses dates back much farther than most fashion gurus realize; all the way back to 1937, when Bausch and Lomb took out a patent to develop a special anti-glare lens to filter out ultraviolet and infrared rays.

The glasses immediately became a hit with the US Army Air Corps and continued to be worn by military men and women for some time. In fact, General Douglas MacArthur sported a pair of Ray-Ban aviators during World War II, furthering the history of Ray Ban sunglasses when Americans at home jumped on the style bandwagon as well.

Another trend that helped the history of Ray-Ban sunglasses along was their appearance in many Hollywood films. While many of us saw our first pair of Ray-Bans in movies like Risky Business or Men in Black, the glasses in movies actually date back to Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961. The Blues Brothers, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, were also seen sporting the classic Wayfarers in their films and Tom Cruise made them a hit with the younger crowd after modeling them in his movie debut Risky Business.

Today, the history of Ray-Ban sunglasses lives on with Barack Obama showing off his own style on the cover of Ebony Magazine. The younger crowd can also get in on the action with the example set by the popular music group The Jonas Brothers, who flaunt their own favorite brand frequently. With many styles and colors to choose from today, it appears that the history of Ray-Ban sunglasses will continue for many years to come.

Get Your Groove Back With Vintage Oakley, Ray-Ban and Revo Eyewear

Looking for something different and exclusively attention-catching to touch up your wardrobe? Do not underestimate the power of retro. While love beads and leg-warmers may never come back in style, other fashion accessories can only look better over time. Accessories like this gain personality with age. And sunglasses such as the vintage Oakley, Revo and Ray-Ban sunglasses are among them.

Oakley is a brand that is relatively new in the market, but it is dynamic, fast-moving player. It is quite difficult to call even its older models "vintage Oakley," since this particular brand prides itself on coming out with new and better models all the time – it may be more apt to say a pair of sunglasses is only either an Oakley or an outmoded Oakley. But come the time, its recent high-tech, state-of-the-art styles will be treasured by collectors, as well!

Ray-Ban is one of the oldest and most trusted names in fashion eyewear. As such vintage Ray-Bans may not be all that hard to find. People have collected Ray-Bans since Hollywood made sunglasses in general during the late 30s and early 40s. The Ray-Ban company has experimented with many styles, setting the trend for different heydays of sunglasses – from time to time it even revives its own retro styles, such as when it re-released its 1983 Wayfarer line of sunglasses in late 2006. No matter how Ray-Ban makes its way through the market, it will remain a household name in shades.

Revos are distinct. As with all vintage shades, authenticity is important, but it gains just that much extra importance with a Revo. These shades were originally manufactured by a NASA engineer, who decided it might be marketable to create wearable lenses out of the material used to protect the portholes of satellites from solar emissions – and was right. Revo lenses are prized for their durability and top-rate UV protection, not to mention their classy frames. Vintage Revos would be a remarkable addition to any collector's trove.

Some retro sunglasses come in quirky styles that would appear humorous, and even downright ridiculous, to a less colorful generation – tapered ends, heart and star shapes, glitter paint, the works. But do not knock it, because these sunglasses may well be the single accent that your boring wardrobe needs. Then again, retro may not always mean quirky – it can also mean classy. You can not go wrong with vintage Oakley, Ray-Ban and Revo sunglasses.

Find Designer Eyewear Frames Right For Your Face

Designer eyeglasses have that extra little something you can not always find in ordinary eyeglasses. It may be the color, the shape or the embellishments; it's always the design, the quality and the panache. In addition to finding glasses that simply look fabulous, however, it is also necessary to find glasses that look fabulous on your face.

Start by figuring out the shape of your face. Often, you can do this by simply pulling back your hair and noticing the shape of your face in the mirror. If you are not sure, use an eyebrow pencil or lipstick to outline your face in the mirror. Is it oval, round, square or heart-shaped? Choose the shape that most closely resembles your outline.

If your face is round, you should choose glasses that are square shaped or rectangular. Stick to more width than height in the shape. This will offset the curves of your face and make it appear less round. In the same way, if your face has lines that are sharper and all about the same width (forehead, temples, jaw line), round glasses can add some welcome curves. When it comes to the shape of your designer eyeglasses, opposites attract.

If your face is wider at the forehead and narrow at the chin, you have what is called a heart shaped face. Your best choice in designer glasses is probably something wider on the bottom and narrows at top. The trouble is, this shape can be difficult to find. Look for a frame that is squarer on the bottom and rounder on top- or even try a rimless pair and see what you think.

If your face is oval shaped, you've hit the jackpot. You can probably wear just about any shape of glasses available. Lucky you, play around with different shapes and colors and find something unique and even a bit extravagant.

When you are considering the size of your eyeglasses, the reverse is true. If you have a small face, great big glasses will overwhelm your features and cover up your face. If you have a large face and try to offset the look with small glasses, you'll only draw attention to the very thing you are trying to minimize. The size of your eyeglasses should complement the size of your face. This way, you will have a total look that is balanced and attractive.

The final tip in choosing the perfect designer eyeglasses is to consider your skin tone when you choose the color of your frames. Typically speaking, warm toned skin looks best in warm toned glasses and cooler tones should look at cooler toned frames.

If you follow these general guides, you should be able to find the perfect designer eyeglasses for your face. Of course, if you have unique or extraordinary features and a bold personality to match, then break the rules all you want and show yourself to the world.

Ray Ben Sunglasses

As humans, we all have the need to protect our eyes. Especially during the summer.

The summertime is great. It's nice, warm, calm, and you just want to sit back and enjoy the sunshine.

ut sometimes what looks like a bit of enjoyable warmth can turn out to be a bit hurtful if you are not careful. Maybe it is unusually scorching hot or it just heated up suddenly. If you're fair skinned and even if you are not, you can end up with really bad sunburn and end up in a lot of pain. After all, there is quite a bit of tenderness that companies sunburn.

However, what may not have occurred to you is the fact that your eyes can actually be sunburnt. Yep. You may have not heard of ocular sunburn, but it really does exist. First of all, look at what you feel when you have regular sunburn. It hurts, it's achy, and you get the chills because of all the heat you are allowing to escape your body because of the burns. It may blister and peel (yuck!) But in the end, you usually end up with it going away. The next time, you wisely remember to wear sunblock and that is all that there is to it.

But, with ocular sunburn, you can not just slap a little bit of sunblock on it-that's seriously unadvised. In fact, you may not even find out your eyes are sunburned for a few hours. They are not painful at first-it is not until later that you realize just how much your eyes hurt.

However, with sunglasses, you're able to easily hide your eyes from the sun and prevent them from being seriously burnt. Not everyone can afford to pay for eye care for many, many years. It's much easier to prevent your eyes from being damaged in the first place, especially from painful ocular sunburn.

This is why the novelty of Ray Ben sunglasses is a great way of caring for your eyes. These are premium sunglasses designed with you in mind with several different designs made for those looking to enhance their wardrobe, but also to keep their eyes safe. You can choose from several different styles, depending on what is the most comfortable and what will benefit you the most.

Keep in mind that when it comes to sunglasses, you want to make sure that you are putting forth a good investment. You do not want horrible sunglasses that will not allow your eyes the protection that they need. If you buy those, then you end up with a lot of damage to your eyes regardless of everything else.

Ray Ben has been around for several years, providing you with great service and for years and years. Sunglasses are a great way of protection your eyes. Thanks to Ray Ban, you can do this without all of the hassle of picking out one type of sunglasses that probably will not last you a long time. You have loads of choices.

Fix Your Eyeglasses With Household Items

Sometimes when you buy new glasses or if you order glasses online, the frames aren’t the proper shape. Over time, your glasses may become warped or a screw may come loose. It’s a hassle to march into your eye doctor’s office every time something slips, bends, or becomes misaligned. No one really wants to spend that kind of time to have someone potentially fix your frames unless you really need it! Besides, what if you’ve been holding off on getting new glasses? Then you have to deal with the pressure of an optician telling you it’s time for an exam only to be told you can wear the same prescription. While some issues, like breakage, warrant an immediate trip to the eye doctor, others do not. Here is a short guide on how to do simple fixes from home with household items.

First and foremost, if your glasses break in any way, shape, or form – go to the eye doctor’s office to get them fixed. Your eyeglasses are of no use to you if you can’t see properly out of them. This includes any scratches or nicks that come across your lenses.

For normal cleaning, you don’t need expensive sprays. In fact, you shouldn’t be using chemicals at all on your lenses! That means no expensive window cleaners, no sprays that state they clean your lenses, TV, and computer screen, and no all purposes cleansers! What can you use? Vinegar and water! Nothing more, nothing less. For a quick clean, mix three parts water to one part vinegar in a spray bottle. Gently mix the two, and then lightly spray your glasses. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe off any smudges, dust particles, and grime. It’s just that easy.

What about your frames? Even the most expensive set of eyeglasses frames can have a few issues. One such issue lies in loose screws. If your temples feel a little loose, just take a small flat-head or diamond-head screwdriver and gently tighten the screw while the glasses are in an open position. Once you try closing the stems, you’ll start to feel the hinge tighten. If the screw is too tight, it may cause the stem to break, so loosen it just a smidge. If you notice the screw becoming loose again, repeat the process but place a dab of clear nail polish on the screw before tightening. The polish will act as a glue without damaging your frames.

What if your frames feel out of shape as a whole? Metal frames are easier to bend and shape into place than plastic frames. If the frames are slightly misaligned, run the frame under warm water and gently bend back into place. If your frames are bent dramatically out of place, ask your optician to fix them. You can also adjust the temples using the same method with hot water but be careful! If you straighten the temples too much, you will risk breaking them if they fall off your face.

There you have it! Three easy household fixes for some common prescription eyeglass problems! Remember, some problems require immediate attention, while others are easily fixed at home. Worse comes to worse, you can always replace your frames and buy glasses online for less than the doctor might charge you for broken frames.

Aviator Sunglasses For Men – Classic Style Continues to Be All the Rage

When Ray Ban created his first pair of aviator sunglasses, it's probably that he did not expect for it to become as popular as it is today. While these shades were originally developed for pilots (since their name), the general public quickly covered on to the latest trend in sun wear. Even decades later, aviator sunglasses for men continues to be all the rage now with more and more people being seen wearing them.

In fact, these shades have had multiple media appearances with the most notable being shown in the movie Top Gun when Tom Cruise is seen wearing them. In addition, even celebrities such as Kanye West and Brad Pitt were spotted wearing them either during performance or while outdoors. These appearances have helped to further propel aviator sunglasses into stardom.

It should be no surprise then that these shades continue to be among the most popular sunglasses around for both young people and professionals alike. For the best quality pilot shades, look no further than the brand Ray Ban. With so many different styles available from mirrored to polarized lenses, you'll be sure to find a pair that suits you.

Not only are the sunglasses extremely comfortable to wear, but they are also versatile and can be worn just about anywhere. In addition, they also never seem to go out style so you do not have to worry about either the sunglasses you have are popular or not. For as long as they around, aviator sunglasses for men will continue to be fashionable.

Aviator Sunglasses – Why You Should Buy the Mirrored Style

Initially designed and manufactured for the US Air Force Pilots, the mirrored aviator sunglasses style has today become one of the most popular with fashion conscious men and women. One can see many popular celebrities and US army personnel flaunting aviator mirrored sunglasses and they are a regular feature in most movies and television serials. Also, there are a number of designer brands which are manufacturing this celebrity style, so you can obtain them in different designs and colors. An easy mark of identification is the trademark wired frames of these shades.

The mirrored aviator style is associated with mystery, danger and action, especially the silver mirrored shades. You could see in all the classic stuff from the 80's-movies and television, the most fashionable style was this one. And not only in looks, but also in performance, the mirrored aviator style is the best in eye protection. These shades are such designed that they are perfect to protect the eyes from harmful UV rays from all angles possible. The polarized design ensures that the path of horizontal light as well as the reflection and glares are blocked to the maximum extent.

This is probably the main reason why it's the favorite of most pilots. It is of utmost importance that when you buy a new pair of sunglasses, the protection factor has to be the best possible. Also they need to be handled carefully as the lenses are quite delicate and vulnerable to scratches. Full Circle – The Story of the Iconic Ray-Ban Wayfarer

While the Ray-Ban Wayfarer is one of those products that has soaked itself into society so thoroughly that it has become an instantly recognizable style, it was not always so. The Wayfarer has gone from popularity to near being discontinued and back again.

What did Ray-Ban do to turn the Wayfarer into an American icon and save it from ultimate doom? Here is the Wayfarer story.

Humble Beginnings

First introduced in 1952, the Wayfarer was originally targeted at pilots, playing off the success of the Aviator model. But rather than go for the large lenses designed to cover the strange-looking tan lines caused by the large goggles worn by the open cockpit pilots of WWI, Wayfarers were much sleeker looking.

But it was thanks to Audrey Hepburn wearing a pair them in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's that wave the Wayfarer initial success.

The Fall

By the 70's, however, sales had become quite slow. Ray-Ban was ready to discontinue the line. Even though they had experienced success, clearly attributable to their appearance in the movies, it was not until 1982 that the whole idea of product placement really took off.

That's when the producers of the soon-to-be filmed ET: The Extra-Terrestrial Approach candy company Mars Inc. about using M & M's in their movie. Mars turned down the offer after film makers asked for payment. Hershey's, on the other hand, decided to take the risk and paid to have Reese's Pieces appear in the movie.

The incredible success of Reese's Pieces' appearance in ET caused product placement companies to start springing up.

Return of an Icon

After being approached by one such company, Ray-Ban agreed to pay to have the Wayfarer appear in the movie Risky Business where Tom Cruise famously wore them through the movie as well as for promotional posters and box covers.

The Wayfarer's 1983 sales saw a boost that would cement its iconic destiny. The Wayfarer went on to appear in over 360 movies and television shows during the next four years.

Today, movies like 1998's The Truman Show lampoon product placement efforts and attempts at covert marketing are easily picked off by savvy viewers. While product placement marketing continues to become more and more of a tricky business in order to pull it off successfully – the goal being to prominently place a product without it being obvious that it's there intentionally – its early successes has guaranteed the Wayfarer a permanent place in marketing and fashion history.
