In 1920, Bausch & Lomb commissioned by the US Air Force lunched a special goggles to combat dazzling glare high above the sky. A few years later, the world's first Vice-green lens sunglasses was born. It comes with protection of the glasses glare, but also anti-UV, thus wining great welcome among the pilots. In 1936, Bausch & Lomb put these sunglasses in the market and it is the privilege of a limited number of people in the show business, or exclusively for the gusto. Especially in the 20 century 30's, it was popular practice for Hollywood stars to wear black sunglasses as a fashion. Now, the situation is completely different. The Latest Trends in Sunglasses

Hollywood is constantly being watched, and for all the right reasons. They set the latest trends in sunglasses, clothing, and everything style related. This year, the hot trend is to wear the oversized sunglasses, but not just any old pair will do. While oversized is cool, there are plenty of brands, no-name companies, and styles that are big no-no's in the world of sunglasses. The most popular styles include: Ray-Ban Wayfarers, 70's style thick framed sunglasses, tortoise shell frames, gradient lenses, John Lennon-style round glasses, Aviators, and oversized sunglasses. However, you have to have them just right in order to actually pull off a trendy look.

The gradient lens sunglasses are one of the latest trends in sunglasses. These will show more attention to detail in the lenses and less in the actual frames. Having them half shaded from top to bottom is all the rage in Hollywood and other stylish locales. Ray-Ban's Wayfarers are an Urban Classic, offering classic black, vintage bright colored, and new two-toned frame choices for the ultimate in classic sunglasses style. The 70's style thicker frames have been popular for a couple of years now, but you need to be very careful when choosing exactly which retro-inspired glasses are right for you.

You could choose a chic pair of retro sunglasses that you think are just the style, but end up purchasing a cheap knock-off, a style from an era that isn't in right now, or even a pair that is completely out and eclectic and won't get you noticed for more than a laugh. Choosing from the latest trends in sunglasses can be tricky. You might buy a pair that look exactly like the ones you saw on Kate Moss, but anyone who's everyone knows that they're nothing like the ones she wore, and hideously out of style in reality. The round "John Lennon" style has only come back in for women, so guys, stay away.

Oversized sunglasses, the librarian look, and tortoise shell glasses are all still hot this year. They will go out of style eventually, but this year isn't their time. These styles, along with Aviators, continue to be the staple pieces in fashionable eyewear when it comes to the latest trends in sunglasses. If you're looking to be hip, hot, and in fashion, stick with these styles and buy only from name-brand companies to get the look you want. Cheap imitations are just in bad taste.

Where Were Sunglasses First Used?

First of all, what are sunglasses? Sunglasses are defined as a visual aid which feature lenses that are colored or darkened or have polarized lenses to protect the eyes from the sun's glare. Why were sunglasses developed? Contrary to popular belief sunglasses were not first developed to protect our eyes from the sun. History has it that smoked tinting was the first means of darkening eyeglasses and the technology was developed in China prior to 1430. These darkened lenses were not vision-corrected. So just why were the lenses darkened and why were they, developed and for what purpose?

Chinese judges wore smoke-colored quartz lenses to conceal their eye expressions in court. A judge's evaluation of evidence as credible or mendacious was to remain a secret until the trial's conclusion. It may come as a surprise that it wasn't until the 20th century that modern-type sunglasses came to be. In 1929 Sam Foster manufactured and sold the first pair of Foster Grant sunglasses. Sam Foster found a ready made market for sunglasses on the beaches of Atlantic City and New Jersey. In the 1930s, the USA Army Air Corps commissioned the optical firm of Bausch and Lomb to produce a highly effective spectacle that would protect pilots eyes from the danger of high-altitude glare. With world War two brewing in 1936, Ray Ban designed an anti-glare aviator style pair of sunglasses, using polarized lenses to maximally shield an aviator's eyes. Fliers were issued these glasses at no charge and the public in 1937 were able to purchase the model that banned the sun's rays as Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses.

What to look for in buying sunglasses. Make sure first of all that the arms of the glasses do fit behind your ears correctly and that they are comfortable. Since the lenses come in different colors choose the color tint that don't make your eyes strain. Next, get the store clerk to go outside of the store with you so you can give the glasses a reality check and an honest test. Do not look directly into the sun with or without the glasses. Remember, cheaper is NOT always the best. This is an important decision for you.

As women since ancient times had hidden seductively behind an expanded fan or a dipped parasol, modern women and men discovered an allure in wearing sunglasses, respective of solar glare. So let me ask the question, and be brutally honest, "why do you wear sunglasses"? What do you really look like behind a pair of sunglasses? Do you really wear them for the sun's glare?

What to look for in buying a pair of sunglasses?

Since for the most part we really do purchase sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sun's rays, especially when we are behind the wheel of a vehicle may I suggest that you please don't buy price, don't just go with the least expensive ones. I am a firm believer that you do get what you pay for. This is far too important of an item to skimp on. Just how important are your eyes? Whether you are driving down the highway on a great summer afternoon in your car with your family or just on the beach relaxing. Personally there are two items that I purchase that I don't skimp on and that is tires for my car and sunglasses. My last pair of sunglasses cost me $ 200.00, don't tell my wife, so please be careful on your selection and do take your time as it is very important. You don't have to spend $ 200.00 but at the time I was driving a commercial vehicle and safety is the first thing your are taught when driving such a large vehicle. Nevertheless, commercial vehicle or not, when you are behind the wheel of any vehicle you should be giving 100% attention to what you are doing because you have other peoples lives as well as your own life in your hands. Trust me on this one because being a commercial driver I have seen it all. Please drive carefully and give the commercial vehicles some room, they can't stop on a dime. Become a defensive driver, and arrive alive. Remember the old saying, and it is true, speed kills.

Sunglasses – Functional Or Fashionable?

Sunglasses, they're something everyone takes for granted until that day you forget to bring them to the beach, or you're driving west into a sunset. The small accessories have only been around since the beginning of the 20th century, but they have become essential for people both as a fashion item, and as a visual aid. Sunglasses are like regular glasses and consist of a frame with two lenses inside of them; these lenses are tinted and in some cases polarized. For people with poor eyesight, prescription sunglasses are available which magnify while still providing shade from the sun giving a clear and shaded view.

The practical use of sunglasses is to shield the eyes of the wearer from ultra violet rays that come from the sun; these UV rays damage the eyes and are known to cause cataracts. Many people are also prone to wearing sunglasses while driving since it is known to reduce the amount of glare and can help with road perception. It is even rumored that sunglasses may help the body respond to jet lag better because it tricks the mind as to what time of day it is.

In popular culture today, sunglasses have become something of a status symbol as well as functional. Many celebrities wear large sunglasses to hide their entire face from the public so they can go unnoticed in many places. This trend helped create a fashion industry for sunglasses, and the prices can range anywhere from five dollars at a convenience store, to a thousand dollars for a pair of designer brand sunglasses.

Regardless of how or why people decide to wear sunglasses, it is clear that they are here to stay. Our eyes have become accustomed to the protection they receive from bright lights and glares that are so present in our society.

The History of Ray Ban Sunglasses and Eye Protection

If you have ever seen Tom Cruise in "Risky Business", you will remember two things. The first being the most famous scene from that movie, the one where he comes sliding into the living room dancing in his underwear, and the second, how good he looked in those sunglasses. Cruise sported Ray Ban sunglasses in this movie and they became as big a hit as the movie itself. By the time this movie was made in 1983 however, Ray Ban had already been making popular sunglasses for 46 years.

The optical firm Bausch and Lomb launched the first Ray Ban sunglasses in 1936, which were anti-glare aviator sunglasses. They were the first to use polarized technology, which was developed by Edwin H. Land, the founder of the Polaroid Corporation. These dark glasses had large lenses, about two or three times the size of the eye socket, in the shape of an oblique teardrop. Instead of being flat, these glasses were slightly convex. The goal of these large, curved glasses was to protect the eyes from every angle for optimal protection from the sun. In the 1940's, Ray Ban was hired by the US Air Force to develop these glasses even further for use by air force pilots. The Aviator glasses soon became popular with the other branches of the US military as well and when General Douglas MacArthur was photographed landing on a beach in the Philippines during World War II, he was wearing a pair of Ray Bans.

Ray Ban has relied on photographs of celebrities to promote their eyewear throughout the years. The Blues Brothers, Miami Vice's Don Johnson, Michael Jackson, and Madonna are just a few of the people who join Tom Cruise as Ray Ban wearers and promoters. Ray Ban Aviators have remained in style for decades but this company also moved with the times in terms of its other models. There were bright, colorful frames to reflect the style of the 60's, big flashy shades in the 70's, and sportier designs of the 80's.

From the beginning, Ray Ban sunglasses have been at the forefront of eye protection technology. These glasses stay in style not only because of their celebrity appeal but also because they are well made and practical.

Ray Ben Sunglasses

As humans, we all have the need to protect our eyes. Especially during the summer.

The summertime is great. It's nice, warm, calm, and you just want to sit back and enjoy the sunshine.

ut sometimes what seems like a bit of enjoyable warmth can turn out to be a bit hurtful if you aren't careful. Maybe it is unusually scorching hot or it just heated up suddenly. If you're fair skinned and even if you aren't, you can end up with really bad sunburn and end up in a lot of pain. After all, there is quite a bit of tenderness that accompanies sunburn.

However, what may not have occurred to you is the fact that your eyes can actually be sunburnt. Yep. You may have not heard of ocular sunburn, but it really does exist. First of all, look at what you feel when you have regular sunburn. It hurts, it's achy, and you get the chills because of all the heat you are allowing to escape your body because of the burns. It may blister and peel (yuck!) But in the end, you usually end up with it going away. The next time, you wisely remember to wear sunblock and that is all that there is to it.

But, with ocular sunburn, you can't just slap a little bit of sunblock on it-that's seriously unadvised. In fact, you may not even find out your eyes are sunburned for a few hours. They aren't painful at first-it isn't until later that you realize just how much your eyes hurt.

However, with sunglasses, you're able to easily hide your eyes from the sun and prevent them from being seriously burnt. Not everyone can afford to pay for eye care for many, many years. It's much easier to prevent your eyes from being damaged in the first place, especially from painful ocular sunburn.

This is why the novelty of Ray Ben sunglasses is a great way of caring for your eyes. These are premium sunglasses designed with you in mind with several different designs made for those looking to enhance their wardrobe, but also to keep their eyes safe. You can choose from several different styles, depending on what is the most comfortable and what will benefit you the most.

Keep in mind that when it comes to sunglasses, you want to make sure that you are putting forth a good investment. You don't want horrible sunglasses that won't allow your eyes the protection that they need. If you buy those, then you end up with a lot of damage to your eyes regardless of everything else.

Ray Ben has been around for several years, providing you with great service and for years and years. Sunglasses are a great way of protection your eyes. Thanks to Ray Ban, you can do this without all of the hassle of picking out one type of sunglasses that probably won't last you a long time. You have loads of choices.

The Current Best Aviator Sunglasses

The following gives details on some of the best aviator sunglasses currently available. Aviator sun glasses were first used by the air force and then they became popular when the movie Top Gun was released. The very first aviator sunglasses were made by Ray-Ban and were also known as Pilot Shades. Designer Sunglasses – Learn About the Different Brands

There are now many different brands of designer sunglasses which have either evolved in their own right, such as Ray Ban or Oakley, or have been created as an accessory to the fashion house brands, such as Gucci and Versace etc. This article examines the backgrounds to these different designer brands, tracing back to their roots and finding out how they were first created and grew into the well-known high street fashion brands that we all desire to wear. Learn about Oakley, Rayban, Dolce and Gabbana, Diesel, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, and Versace.

1. Oakley Sunglasses

Oakley is mostly known for their quality sunglasses and ski goggles, and was founded by Jim Jannard in California, USA in 1975, where he developed motorbike hand grips, and then sold them at motocross events. He called them "The Oakley Grip" , and were very different to any other grips riders had been using. In the 1980's he moved on to goggles and sunglasses, and is now a world leader in innovative design, creating new and exciting products.

UV and impact protection

Plutonite is used for all Oakley lenses. It is made of polycarbonate, making the lenses lightweight, offering superior comfort, clarity and protection against ultraviolet radiation and impact resistance. In fact, this impact resistant material blocks out 100% of all UVA, UVB and UVC radiation. The protection is formulated into the lens material, as opposed to a thin surface film that can become scratched, leaving dilated pupils exposed to ultraviolet leaks. Shielding has nothing to do with the darkness or color of the lens, so even clear non-tinted Oakley lenses will still provide full UV protection.

The wrapped around, raked-back design of Oakley eyewear provides further protection by blocking UV from the periphery. The lens materials and frame geometries of Oakley sunglasses provide unsurpassed protection against high-velocity and high-mass impact.

Iridium lens coatings

This is a uniform filtering layer that optimizes contrast and minimizes glare, created by super-heated metallic oxides being fused to the lens at a molecular level, permanently bonding to the lens. Tuned to transmit from 9 to 92% of available light, the coatings are specifically formulated for optimal balance between reflection, transmission and absorption.

Every single pair of Oakley polarized sunglasses achieves 99.9% efficiency in blocking polarized light waves. Harsh glare is caused by light waves bouncing off flat surfaces and water, and can be up to 10 times as bright as ambient light. With Oakley polarized lenses you'll definitely keep the sun from impeding your vision.

Oakley's polarization technology surpasses industry standards for clarity, performance and durability. Common techniques of incorporating polarization films into lenses by lamination (using adhesive to sandwich the film between lens layers) and drop forming (sandwiching then heating and pressing over contoured forms) can cause haziness and optical distortion. Oakley uses an injection-molding process to infuse the lens material around the filter. This liquid fusion creates bonding at a molecular level, allowing the filter to achieve the highest possible level of performance.

Hydrophobic (repels water)

The hydrophobic lenses repel water, oil perspiration and dust. Liquids simply bead off the lens surface without streaking, and any liquids that do not slide off the lens by gravity can be more easily wiped away than with other makes of sunglasses, making cleaning your lenses a breeze.

Oleophobic (repels oils)

The oleophobic characteristics end the frustration experienced with oils, fingerprints and other smudges on conventional eyewear. These marks on your Oakley sunglasses will easily wipe away without residue, eliminating leftover haze and reducing the effort required to clean the lenses.

The anti-static properties mean that dust, dirt and other particles are not drawn to the lens via static electricity. Dirt and dust degrade optical clarity, prompt more frequent cleaning and increase the likelihood of scratching.

3-Point fit

Oakley sunglasses are engineered to maintain a comfortable, secure fit. The company's patented "Three-Point Fit" ensures that each frame makes contact only at the bridge of the nose and behind the temples. This retains optics in perfect alignment and eliminates the discomfort of ordinary frames that hook the ears and mount with unbalanced pressure points. Some earstems are sheathed in "unobtainium" , an Oakley innovation that actually increases grip with perspiration.

This is the name of Oakley's hydrophilic (water-attracting) synthetic rubber that increases grip when wet, usually applied to the contact points of the sunglasses (nose and sides of the head). A very similar material was used in Oakley's first product, the "Oakley grips", used on motorcycle hand grips (mentioned earlier).

Frame composition

Engineering breakthroughs in structural materials allow Oakley to produce lightweight, high performance eyewear frames that maintain superior comfort and protection. The polymers used in "O Matter" frames (a nylon composite) are formulated for high durability, as well as controlled flexibility for improved safety during …

History of Aviator Sunglasses For Men – Origin of Pilot Shades

With many popular celebrities such as Kanye West and Britney Speas wearing pilot shades, aviator sunglasses for men have become extremely popular among the general public. Movies such as Top Gun have also propelled the popularity of these shades as well. What many people do not realize is that aviator sunglasses have been around much longer.

The first pair of aviator sunglasses was originally developed specifically for pilots by none other than Ray Ban in 1936. Not only were these shades extremely comfortable to wear, but they also protected the whole eye from dangerous rays from the sun and helped pilots to see better during their flight missions. The lenses were also built to be impact proof for even better durability.

The design is based off goggles that were currently in use by the U.S. Military at the time. Nothing has changed since then and even the design remains very much similar to the shades created back in the day. In fact, aviator sunglasses for men continue to be issued to pilots around the world not only for their comfort, but also for their ability to protect the pilots’ eyes from the sun.

A year following their debut, Ray Ban began selling these pilot shades to the public and have continued to remain largely popular. In fact, if you go to the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C. you’ll see a pair of pilot shades that were worn by NASA astronauts from 1969 when they landed on the moon.

Since its creation, aviator sunglasses for men still continues to remain in style with many people swearing by them. With so many different styles available, you’ll be sure to find what you are looking for. You can even find pilot shades that have lenses that are polarized or mirrored for better visibility. With continued media appearances, these shades will continue to remain a trend.

Michael Jackson's Trademark Sunglasses

Michael Jackson's life was plagued with heartache and sadness. Despite his astronomical success, he was constantly hiding behind a mask. Ever since his early career, the King of Pop disguised himself in a fa├žade of outfits, which made him a style icon. From black leather jackets and black trousers combined with white socks to dark shades and a penchant for wearing a single white glove, people over the years have copied his look.

Michael Jackson popularized Ray Ban sunglasses back in the early 80's during the "Thriller" era. In 1984, while filming a Pepsi Cola commercial, the singing sensation experienced second degree burns to his scalp after pyrotechnics accidentally set his hair on fire. It was during this time that he started to become more self-conscious of his image due to the rhinoplastry surgery he had undergone to treat the burns.

In that same year, he was photographed in Ray Ban Aviators when he met with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House for his support of charities that helped people overcome alcohol and drug abuse. This became a trademark of his style as he continued to wear the sunglasses as part of his overall look. Michael Jackson suffered from vitilgo, a chronic disorder that caused whiteness in his skin and made him extremely sensitive to the sun, giving him good reason to wear sunglasses.

The Moonwalker's choice of sunglasses is favored by airline pilots which were first created in 1937, characterized by dark lenses and metal frames. After numerous cosmetic surgery operations, only two of which he admitted to having, there was barely anything left of his nose. The lightness of the Ray Ban Aviators were perfect for his face as it relieved pressure on his diminishing nose, yet provided maximum coverage for the eyes.
